Understanding the difference between the in-patient program and others
It is not uncommon for people to confuse the in-patient addiction treatment with the residential format. They do offer similar services and share the same goals. For instance, they both remove the individual from their home environment and offer them a safe haven to recover and relax in. They each require that the client move into the facility during the addiction treatment and recovery process unlike the out-patient program where the client attends meetings or counseling.
The key difference between the two is that in-patient addiction treatment programs can be conducted in both the alternative or residential setting as well as in the traditional facilities that look like clinics, hospitals, and motels. Conversely, the residential rehab program is conducted in a homelike environment with the amenities of home. The question is which one of these programs is more effective and has a higher success rate?
The answer is both of them – provided they are both operating in the alternative or residential setting. The problem with the traditional in-patient addiction treatment facilities is that their cold appearance can be very intimidating to the client and inhibit their focus on recovering from their addiction. Additionally, they rely on ineffective, conventional therapies while taking a generalized approach to the individual by treating all of their clients in similar fashion. As a result, 4 out of 5 of their clients (80%) eventually relapse.
